Although they are now extinct in the Gulf Coast waters, these lovely birds are still associated with the state of Florida, where I lived for many years as a young girl. This is an homage to the Lesser Flamingo, whose shape, color and unique features were an utter joy to discover in detail as I painted. The piercing, ancient eye and upside-down beak are surrounded by several different textures of feathers, in an array of peaches and violet blues, with a subtle glow of warmth. There is love in this piece for the forms in this gorgeous bird.
